Some good calls there
I will add:
The very unpredictability of it...the reason it's the best game on the planet is that anything can happen - the best team doesn't always win and it only takes a second to score a goal...
The beauty of watching a great player do something remarkable - just thinking of some of the greats I've seen, Maradona, Dalglish, Platini, Zidane, Messi...players who made football special for me.
Steven Gerrard's impossible heroics in turning massive games for Liverpool...Istanbul, Wembley, Panathanaikos...
Tackles. Long may they live. A crunching tackle won against the odds is one of the very best things in football and can turn a whole game
A player beating one or two defenders with a turn of pace
Alan Hansen - he can irritate, but he's great TV still
Alan Green. This will go down a storm I know .
Souness as a pundit. Souness as a player. Not Souness as a manager.
The fact that supporting a team becomes a part of who you are...it can mean tears and traumas as much as happy days, but it's there and it's special
The BFF and intelligent footie conversation
The way in which it has helped me bond with people I meet who I would otherwise have f**k all in common with
Watching England in pubs in the World Cup and Euros (apart from the occasional borderline racism)
The offside rule - the original one
The feeling you get when your team scores a massive goal or wins a big game
You'll Never Walk Alone and everything about LFC (apart from the owners)
Guardian guides to the season or major tournaments
Goal of the month/season/tournament
Terrace wit and banter
Supporters who campaign on issues that matter to them
The hope of pre-season
Brazil
The game I grew up with, which was 100% better than the Premier League era in almost every sense

Wrong there Galactico - As a manager in England, you may be correct but Souness as manager of RFC made monumental changes to the bigotted mindset at Ibrox - he insisted on being able to sign players based on skill rather than their religious background, can you imagine the shock waves that that action alone caused?
Mind you, we also hated him for being the founder of a regime that turned them into an unbeatable machine for the best part of a decade (when they became the 2nd Scottish team to win 9 titles in a row )

Oh for sure, he deserves huge credit for his time at Rangers on many levels. I was happy enough when he took over from Dalglish, although Toshack was my preferred choice at the time. But his managerial record since Rangers is poor and it was his reign that ended Liverpool's dominance of the English game.
He talks so much sense as a pundit, but he has never cut it as a manager other than in his first job - compare him to the brilliant but pretty inarticulate Bob Paisley, wearing slippers and saying "We try not to get too overidden with tactics an' that" and you can see how so many managers who talk a good game get jobs they can't then do.

My point is basically that whilst he never cut it at the very top level as a manager, his record is actually far better, with far more achievements than many people who have got more favourable coverage.
Even leaving aside his spell at Rangers, he won an FA Cup at Liverpool, a League Cup at Blackburn and a promotion, a Turkish Cup and finished runners up in Portugal.
He is hardly a disaster. The reason he's painted as such is because of the Liverpool bias in the media who want to heap all the club's problems of the 90s at his door. They pretend King Kenny was perfect and forget the fact that he left a side of 30 somethings that had run out of both legs and motivation.

I agree with Prof, both KK's were quick to jump ship when it started going Pete Tong.
Souness is by far the best pundit on TV, regardless of what he did as a manager, he was also one of the best players of his generation, so two out of three aint bad.
At the top level of the game I dont think there is much to like about the match going experience at football at all.
One of the better things is teams nicking our songs.
He put in THAT tackle when playing for Rangers, against Rapid Vienna I believe, which made the derby yesterday look like Swan Lake by comparison.
....Just my own views on Sour-ness.

Prof...while it I true that Dalglish made some strange decisions in the months after Hillsborough and thatsome players were getting on, when he left Liverpool we were reigning champions and top of the table. Souness, whatever his achievements at more modest clubs, was an unmitigated disaster as our manager. He sold players who still had plenty to offer and replaced them with the likes of Paul Stewart, Mark Walters, Istvan Kozma, Julian Dicks and a series of desperately average Scandiavians...Piechnick, Kvarme et al. We went from being the best team in the country to the worst Liverpool team since the days before Shankly. He himself admits he made mistakes, but the extent of our collapse under him was beyond belief. His first signing, Rob Jones, was maybe his only really top class one. None of that can be pinned at Kenny's door, some fine tuning was needed when Souness took over, not the demolition he undertook.

Having said all that, I don't know whether I have seen a better central midfielder than Souness in his prime, he was Hoddle and Keane rolled into one. A magnificent player.

Terrace songs. But, importantly (especially as a fan from a far from blameless fanbase in this respect) - songs that aren't racist/spiteful/personally intrusive.
Ronnie Goodlass doing the Everton punditry on Radio Merseyside. "It's one where...." (endlessly). "He looks like he's going to be on for a while. That's a sleeping bag he's got under his shirt" (about Andy Reid coming on as a sub for Sunderland)

he talks like he's surprised sometimes if you speak to him aswell.
Met him at a game years ago and spoke to him for couple of mins. Seemed a decent enough bloke too. Didnt believe i was a Burnley fan at Wrexham v Gills last game of the season when the Gills needed to lose they did and my boys Burnley who played away at Scunny needed a win and they got it and wo promotion to the championship. I couldnt get a ticket for ours so went there instead.
Had the Burnley top on under my jacket made him anyhow!

I agree with Stacki about Sara Jane, she knows her stuff as well, especially good on Cricket AM in the summer.
I like standing on the terraces with a pint in my hand and singing with my mates.
I like paying £7 to get in the ground.
I like mixing with the oppostition fans in their clubhouse thereby putting money into their football team rather than a lining a chain pubs pockets.
I like getting in the ground at ten to three and singing "Bring on United" until the teams come out, rather than waiting for some knob dj to put the entry music on to get the crowd going.
I especially liked the flares at the Boo Camp before the semi final which totally screwed citehs Blue Moon introduction.
I like seeing FC United of Manchester results in the sunday papers in writing I can read rather than the really small stuff hidden away at the bottom of the page.
I like non league football more than I had liked top flight football for a lot of years.

In a city with so many catholics, you boast that Rangers inadvertently signed a handful in their entire history? It's a pointless exercise - we all remember the outcry from certain fans when Souness signed Mo Johnston and declared that he would sign any player, regardless of religion. It was highly controversial at the time and a national news story. Credit to him for that.

Galactico - I might be wrong, but I thought Evans signed Kvarme? Although you're right he brought lots of average players to Liverpool. But he also signed Redknapp and promoted Fowler and McManaman.... his time at Liverpool wasn't a success I'd totally agree and nor was Newcastle, but he was far from useless generally. He was a decent manager caught short at the very top level.

Actually Prof, sorry you are right about Kvarme, the other big Sandinavian signing was Stig Inge Byornebye, also an ordinary player. But you're wrong about Redknapp, who was a Dalglish signing. McManaman was an under-confident, inconsistent performer under Souness who was transformed under Evans in a change of role - Souness tended to prefer Bjornebye to him. Fowler had a few games on the fringes but it was really Evans who brought him on - and again, both these two were coming through in the Dalglish era so not sure Souey can claim the credit.
He had bad luck with some signings - Nigel Clough, Michael Thomas, Mark Wright and Dean Saunders all went into varying degrees of decline at Anfield, while the likes of Beardsley, Staunton and Houghton were sold and went on to do well elsewhere. It could be argued that, apart from Rob Jones, Neil Ruddock was Souness's best signing...
He bought and sold unwisely and thought that dressing people down was the way to instil passion. The club was in disarray by the time he departed. For us to fall as far as we did as quickly as we did reflects exceptionally badly on Souness, who arguably improved later in his career but is nowhere near the level Dalglish was as a manager. Dalglish went on to win the title at Blackburn, an extraordinary achievement even given the money spent (they weren't Chelsea style spenders, more like Man U under Big Ron in the 80s), though Kenny's period at Newcastle was a strange one in which he made some peculiar signings. If anything, I think Souness's friends in the media try to hype the story about his poor inheritance at Anfield - the fact remains that he inherited a team that was top of the table and champions and within a few years, the empire had crumbled.
A decent manager at a middling club perhaps, but like you say, never cut it at the top level.
